Land Animals on Bocas del Toro

Because of its historical geographical isolation, the wildlife
of the Bocas del Toro archipelago includes a variety of species unique to the
region. This includes the red frog
on Isla Bastimentos, which belongs to a family of frog whose skin produces
a venom used by the Pre-Colombian Indians to poison their arrows.
Other animals found in Bocas del Toro include:
- 3 species of sea turtles
(leatherback, green, hawksbill)
- The tiny "titi" or tamarin monkeys (Saguinus geoffroyi),
white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) and howler monkeys (Alouatta
palliata).
- Caiman
- West Indian manatee
- Baird's tapir
- Jaguar
- Brown-throated three-toed sloth and Hoffman's two-toed sloth
