San Cristobal is the most largest ngobe indian village of the island, and one of the main indian communities of region.

The have an electricity generator, public telephone and a primary school with over 100 students.

As with most indian villages in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, the most important economic source is fishing, plus subsistence agriculture and animal farming. The villagers grow vegetables (cocoa, yucca, rice) and farm chicken, pigs, and make handicrafts. Some of the villagers commute to Bocas del Toro to work in shops or for the government.

Just offshore from the community is located a deep channel that running parallel to the coast. This channel is followed by the large ships heading for the port of Almirante. There they load up with bananas from the Changuinola plantations and carry them to Europe and North America.
